A five-year-old Finnish manufacturer of skis and snowboards, Pusu, has decided to partner with Spinnova, using its sustainable fibers to replace carbon and glass fiber as a durable, composite reinforcement material to go with wood. The company has already started pre-selling the first model of skis made with Spinnova for delivery in the early part of 2022. Called Abisko Spinnova, it’s a backcountry touring ski priced at €1,299 per pair. Spinnova is a Finnish start-up that has developed a process to make sustainable fibers from renewable resources such as wood and waste from the production of leather, using minimum amounts of water, chemicals and CO2 emissions. Spinnova, which plans to start commercial production at a new factory at the end of 2022, is also working with Adidas, Icepeak and The North Face.
