Dainese, D-Air Lab and Enel (Ente Nazionale per l'Energia Elettrica) have collaborated on the development of the Safety Jacket, an innovative jacket which is meant to protect workers from the consequences of an impact or fall while working at a height. D-Air Lab is a start-up linked to Dainese. The new jacket is based on D-air technology, the protective airbag already designed and commercialized by Dainese for motorcycling and skiing. The Safety Jacket has been designed and developed in collaboration with experts in occupational health from the University of Bologna and doctors from the Policlinico Sant'Orsola hospital, also in Bologna. The Safety Jacket is composed of an electronic part, which recognizes fall conditions and sends an activation signal, and a pneumatic part, which protects the worker against impact by inflating special airbags around the body. The first prototype of the jacket, which is currently in the testing phase, has been created based on the requirements set out by Enel, the Italian group that produces and distributes electricity and gas in 29 countries across four continents. Engineers and experts are currently testing the ergonomics and functionality of the jacket in real-life situations. Once refined, the jacket is supposed to find applications in multiple industrial fields, according to Dainese.
