Dutch media reported earlier this week that Decathlon intends to open a store in the Vroom & Dreesman (V&D) building in the center of The Hague, along with other city center stores in former V&D stores in Amsterdam and Utrecht. The V&D department store chain, an emblematic Dutch retailer with prominent locations in city centers, went bankrupt earlier this year. The Decathlon store in The Hague would apparently open around the end of the year and spread over about 3,500 square meters on two floors. The news was reported by Sport Partner on the basis of reports from Omroep West, De Telegraaf and RTL Z. It adds that Decathlon has long wanted to open a store in The Hague and had found a location near the motorway between The Hague and Amsterdam, but apparently hasn't yet obtained a permit to trade there. If that opening does go ahead, Decathlon could combine the smaller city center location with a larger out-of-town store in a strategic location, as it has done elsewhere. Decathlon currently has six stores in the Netherlands and is opening its first Dutch city center store on the Coolsingel in Rotterdam in April.
