The German subsidiary of Decathlon has published record sales growth of 28.4 percent in the last fiscal year, with a total of €1.06 billion in 2022. Total EBIT is 30.1 million, with outdoor, mobility, water sports and fitness being the strongest product categories (around 70 percent of total turnover). In 2022, over 20 million purchases were made in Decathlon Germany’s online and brick-and-mortar shops.
During the last year, the French company has opened three new stores in Germany (Augsburg, Stuttgart and Münster), expanding to a total of 85 physical stores. For 2023, Decathlon Germany plans to open four more stores (in Aachen, Hamburg-Oststeinbek, Mainz and Elmshorn). The existing shop in Wallau will be doubled in size. According to the company, the sporting goods manufacturer and retailer is planning to invest a sum of €50 million in its site development this year. There are also plans to implement new mechanization technology following the expansion of logistics in Schwetzingen.
In 2022, Decathlon Germany also expanded the sales contribution of its eco-design products (to 30 percent – with 35 percent being planned for 2023) and the range of circularity services. Throughout the last year, Decathlon sold more than 20,000 used products via its “Second Use” program and carried out more than 15,000 repairs in its own workshops and service points. A new addition is the circularity service “Buy Back”, in which Decathlon buys back used sports products such as bicycles, repairs them if necessary, and resells them at a discount to the original price via Second Use.
Decathlon Germany employs 5,520 people in Germany, spread across 85 stores (76.9 percent), two logistics centers (16.6 percent) and four campus locations (6.5 percent) in Plochingen, Schwetzingen, Dortmund and Berlin (as of Dec. 31, 2022).
