Nike’s logistic center for European, Middle Eastern and African (EMEA) region, located in Laakdal, Belgium, officially opened a few weeks ago a new distribution center for equipment and accessories, enlarging the capacity of the whole complex by some 30,000 square meters. The construction of the new equipment distribution center began in February 2006 as part of a major plan to optimize the supply chain. Sustainable development is a major part of the project. It is powered through a wind park that was inaugurated in 2006 and it uses a far–reaching garbage selection process and special lighting. The insulation of the building is double of what the legal norms require. The orientation of the building maximizes daylight, while special sunscreens keep heat out. Ground-cooling tubes replace an air-conditioning system, and draft-reduction systems preserve heat in the colder months of the year.
