The Covid-19 pandemic led to a 9.5 percent decline to €5.8 billion in sales of outdoor products by vendors in Europe, according to the annual State of Trade (SoT) market research report compiled by the European Outdoor Group (EOG). In terms of value, the most affected subcategories were backpacks and luggage (-16.9%), footwear (-10.4%) and apparel (-10.4%). Smaller declines were recorded for sleeping bags, tents, climbing gear and accessories. Countrywise, the largest drop was recorded in Norway (-12.9%) and the smallest one in Poland (-2.6%). Among the largest markets, sales fell by 8.9 percent in Germany, by 9.8 percent in the U.K. and by 11.9 percent in France. On the other hand, partial data from the EOG’s Outdoor Retail Benchmark Report indicate that the European market recovered by 18.6 percent at retail during the first half of 2021.
