The Football Association (FA), the governing body of English associative soccer, has announced a new five-year sustainability strategy. Dubbed “Playing for the Future,” the new strategy sets the body’s environmental ambitions until 2028 and beyond. The plan focuses on three core areas:
- “Shoot for net zero,” aiming to achieve net zero carbon emission status by 2040, to reduce electricity consumption by 30 percent by 2028 from a 2019 baseline, and to reduce gas consumption by 20 percent by 2028 from a 2019 baseline.
- “Save our resources,” aiming to optimize resource consumption and minimize the impact of waste; and
- “Make an impact” to drive environmental and societal change across leagues, clubs, and with partners.
The new sustainability strategy has been designed through consultation with various football stakeholders and environmental experts. The strategy will be reviewed every two years. Further updates will be provided in due course, The FA explains on its website. The 21-page document that outlines the new FA’s sustainability strategy is available for download from the organization’s website. Founded in 1863, The FA is the world’s oldest football association.
