The U.K. government has released a policy paper entitled “Maximising Resources, Minimising Waste,” which summarizes the actions it will undertake to maximize resources and minimize waste across a series of key sectors, including the textile industry.

Through its Net Zero Strategy, the U.K. government is committed to the near elimination of biodegradable municipal waste being sent to landfill from 2028, as well as reduced emissions from landfill and incineration, saving an estimated 35 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2050.

In the Textiles sector, the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)’s Circular Fashion Programme will fund £15 million (€17.4m) to drive action to tackle some of the industry’s challenges in adopting a circular business model. This program will act as: “A basis to initiate a ten-year vision of transforming the fashion and textiles sector,” supporting the adoption of economically viable circular models by 2032.

The document is structured into tables that represent the relevant chapters of its waste prevention program, complete with target dates where available. The other objectives and target dates for Textiles as well as Construction, Furniture and Furnishing, Electrical and Electronic Products, Road Vehicles, Packaging, and Food and drink can be found in the online policy paper on the U.K. government official website.
