Volumental, a Sweden-based global platform offering 3D foot scanners, announced that it has seen an 85 percent increase in revenue this year and scans half a million consumers’ feet per month. With poor fit being the most common reason for shoe returns, stores that have implemented Volumental’s foot scanning technology and AI-powered recommendation engine have seen returns drop by an average of 20 percent, the company said.

Brands such as Hoka, Under Armour, New Balance, Fleet Feet, Red Wing Shoes and The Athlete’s Foot already rely on Volumental’s foot scanners to provide a personalized shopping experience for their customers, resulting in a better omnichannel experience overall. Once a customer is scanned in-store, they receive their personalized foot scan via email, allowing them to better identify the best style and size for their feet, whether they are shopping in-store or online.

“We’re very excited about the measurable impact of our FitTech solutions on the business results of our rapidly growing list of global clients,” said Alper Aydemir, co-founder and CEO of Volumental. “With our momentum in delivering massive value for retailers and their shoppers, we’re constantly unlocking new uses for our data-driven recommendations across the entire range of omnichannel touchpoints, which bodes very well for continued healthy growth.”

Volumental also provides footwear manufacturers with key data from its 33 million foot scans to improve fit, comfort and performance. Athletic footwear, in particular, is becoming more specialized as major brands use new technologies to improve performance. For example, Adidas and Lululemon have used the data to develop better-fitting shoes specifically for women’s feet, Volumental said in a press release.
