With Adidas extending its kit sponsorship deal with Manchester United by ten years, the contract runs until 2035 and guarantees the football team at least £900 million (€1.05bn). Adidas rejoined Man United for the 2015/16 season after a 23-year break, with the current agreement running for another two years until 2025.Since 2015, the company paid a record £750 million as the Premier League club’s kit supplier.
It was not disclosed whether the new contract will keep the clause that requires Man United to pay a penalty of up to 30 percent if it fails to reach the Champions League for two seasons in a row. That’s what happened after the 2018/19 season, although the Red Devils returned to the Champions League after the Covid-shortened 2019/20 season. The new deal is by far the biggest kit sponsorship in the Premier League but is surpassed by FC Barcelona (Nike, €155 million per year, including bonuses) and Real Madrid (Adidas, €120 million per year, depending on jersey sales).
“It is quite natural that we continue to cooperate,” said Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden. “We will combine tradition and innovation to inspire both players and fans. We look forward to continuing our partnership with one of the most iconic clubs in football.”
Man United’s new away kit for the 2023/24 season was also recently unveiled, inspired by the club’s past but redefined for a new generation of stars. Two decades after the last time the club wore vertical stripes, the jersey revisits a design that represents the club in its early days. The new jersey was worn for the first time on Man United’s U.S. pre-season tour when the team played Wrexham A.F.C. at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium (July 25).
