Bike Europe reports that exports of bicycles from Taiwan jumped by 13.9 percent in volume to 1,475,000 complete bicycles for the first four months of this year. After several years of stagnation, the value of these exports advanced by 10.1 percent to $599 million, although the average value per exported bicycle dropped by 3.3 percent to $406.15. Exports of complete bicycles to the European Union, by far the largest export market for these products from Taiwan, climbed by 25.1 percent for the four months in volume, reaching 883,000 units. The figures come from the Taiwan Bicycle Association (TBA). Bike Europe commented that the rise was surprising, given reports that production is being shifted from Taiwan to Europe – a trend exacerbated by the strong dollar. As an example it pointed to the Giant facility in Lelystad, in the Netherlands, which is said to be running at full capacity with increased OEM production for brands such as Scott.
