Aleksander Ceferin was re-elected as UEFA president by acclamation at the 47th Ordinary UEFA Congress, which was held in Lisbon on April 5. Ceferin, a 55-year-old Slovenian lawyer, will serve a further four-year term, his third as president of the continental sport governing body. Ceferin’s election did not come as a surprise since, as we previously reported, he had emerged in January as the only candidate for the role. He was first elected UEFA president in 2016 at an extraordinary congress in Athens to replace Michel Platini, who was forced to resign in connection with an allegedly disloyal payment he received from then FIFA president Sepp Blatter in 2011. Both Platini and Blatter were acquitted of fraud by a Swiss court last July. Ceferin previously served as the president of the Slovenian football association from 2011 to 2016. The next Ordinary UEFA Congress will take place in Madrid on Feb. 8, 2024.
