Decathlon has inaugurated a new distribution center in Barcelona, Spain, to service the European continent. The facility, which replaces a previous one in the area, covers some 95,987 square meters on 167,751 square meters of land. It is adjacent to the Port of Barcelona and ten minutes from the Barcelona airport. For the small carbon footprints of its construction and operation – the facility is lit by LEDs that are triggered by motion sensors and fed by selar power – it has also received the highest level of environmental certification (Platinum) from LEED, which is run by the U.S. Green Building Council. The French sporting goods retailer struck a deal for the facility’s construction back in 2018, investing €53.4 million. There are two logistical buildings of 46,610 square meters apiece and a third office building, for offices, of 2,767 square meters. Its 112 loading docks have automated systems. According to the facility’s director, Marc Mata, the staff of about 325 has recently been expanded by 51 and a further 20 logistical personnel will be joining soon. Decathlon Spain’s director of logistical transformation, Daniel Mangas, adds that the new facility is “one of Decathlon’s first steps in the important transformation of its logistics and value chain that began this year and will continue through 2024.”
