Descente booked a comprehensive net loss of 1,389 million yen (€12.3m-$13.8m) for the first quarter, compared with net income of ¥1,077 million in the year-ago period, for the first quarter to June 30, claiming foreign currency exchange adjustments of ¥2,278 million (€20.1m-$22.7m), apparently related to the appreciation of the yen. Sales increased by 4 percent to ¥27.9 billion (€246.6m-$278.2m) in the seasonally small quarter. Revenues from athletic apparel fell by 4.5 percent as Umbro's problems in the Japanese market offset strong sales under the Descente and Skins brands. Outdoor apparel dropped by 1.4 percent in spite of strong sales for Marmot in the market. The company's sales in Western markets, including the U.S. and Europe, amounted to only ¥563 million (€5.0m-$5.6m), consisting mainly of skiwear.
