The International Swimming Federation (FINA) has become World Aquatics following a vote in Melbourne on Dec. 12 at an extraordinary congress on the eve of the World Swimming Championships (25m) 2022.
Founded in 1908, FINA controls the development of aquatic events in swimming, water polo, diving, artistic swimming, high diving and open water swimming. FINA is a French acronym (Fédération Internationale de Natation) where “Natation” represents swimmers, but nowadays, swimmers are only one part of the FINA family, World Aquatics president Husain Al-Musallam said while announcing the governing body’s rebranding. “We need a name that reflects the whole FINA family,” he added.
The new World Aquatics visual identity will be launched at the first events of 2023. In the meantime, the federation’s portfolio of digital assets has been refreshed, including @worldaquatics social platforms. A new website will be launched next summer. The World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka on July 14-30, 2023, will be the first World Championships to integrate the new brand identity fully.
