Halfords Group registered higher revenues in the first quarter ended June 27, driven by strong growth in bicycle sales. The British retailer said comparable store sales of cycling products grew 21.3 percent, compared with a consolidated comparable store sales increase of 7.9 percent across all its retail segments, which include car maintenance, car enhancement and travel solutions. Sales of premium bikes grew 35.1 percent, while comparable sales for the travel solutions unit, which includes car top boxes and cargo racks, increased 4.2 percent during the period. The strong trading momentum continued into the first quarter from last financial year, when the group reported higher profits and revenues largely due to the U.K.'s growing passion for cycling, combined with online shopping and a revamp of its products, which drove strong growth across the business. In June this year, the retailer acquired Boardman Bikes and Boardman International, a British bicycle manufacturer founded by the British track cyclist Chris Boardman, who won an individual pursuit gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.
