Jean-Claude Bel, the chief executive of the European Fishing Tackle Trade Association, says that the angling industry in Europe hasn't been hurt too badly by the tough economic climate of recent years. He singled out a strong industry in France, where the EFTTA will hold its annual trade show, EFTTEX, in a few months. He said that the French market as well as exports from the country were both doing well, and that France probably has the highest per capita spending on fishing gear in Europe. It is the biggest market by value on the continent. Spain is also showing improvement. The much-publicized problems in Greece aren't a huge concern because it is a small market for angling. Italy's industry is struggling during its political changes. EFTTEX, being held June 1-3 at Paris Nord Villepinte, is nearly sold out, Bel said, at least in part because the association's show is getting visitors from the SAPEL show, which isn't being held this year.
