Boohoo appears to have put “Made in the UK” labels on perhaps thousands of articles of clothes that were manufactured in southern Asia (Pakistan, for example), as we have learned through Business of Fashion. The original – and presumably correct – labels were removed and replaced last year at the brand’s factory in Leicester, according to the BBC’s original story.
According to Boohoo, the BBC continues, the mislabeling was due to a misinterpretation of the rules and took place with one in 250 of the brand’s global supply of garments from January to October 2023. It was an isolated incident and “a result of human error.” A spokesman for Boohoo says that the brand has “taken steps to ensure this does not happen again.”
The factory in Leicester was opened about two years ago, expressly for production that would qualify for “Made in the UK” labeling. According to another report by the BBC, Boohoo is likely to close it soon.
