The European Union will examine the possibility of imposing sanctions against Belarus for its role in supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine, according to Czech prime minister Petr Fiala. The Czech Republic holds the rotating presidency of the European Union. “We are currently examining […] Belarus’ role and the potential need to target it,” Fiala said after a visit to Kyiv.
Belarus is not taking part in the fighting but authorizes Russia to station troops on its territory. Russia also used Belarus as a base for its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.
Fiala noted that some sanctions are already in place against Belarus, “but we can’t accept that Belarus supports Russia’s policy or that Russia circumvents the impact of sanctions through countries such as Belarus.” He said that Russia has to be further isolated, adding that sanctions imposed against the country by the EU are working.
