Helmet manufacturer Riddell is facing a patent infringement lawsuit filed in an Illinois district court by inventor William Jacob. Jacob, a former patent counselor for General Motors, claims that Riddell unlawfully used his patented technology related to energy absorption and dispersal in its popular Speedflex and Axiom helmets.
According to the lawsuit, Jacob shared his invention with Riddell in 2012. While the company initially showed interest, they ultimately decided not to pursue a partnership. However, two years later, Riddell released the Speedflex helmet, which Jacob alleges incorporates elements of his patented design. The patent in question, No. 11464271, is at the center of the dispute, and Jacob is seeking damages, an injunction, and attorney’s fees.
The lawsuit raises serious questions about intellectual property rights in the sports equipment industry, especially in the realm of safety technology, where innovation is critical. Riddell’s reputation and approach to helmet technology could be scrutinized as the legal battle unfolds.
