Cristina Álvarez is now the  Chairwoman of Spanish retailer El Corte Inglés, the board of directors having approved on Jan. 15 her appointment last year, on Nov. 26.

Álvarez is also assuming the chairmanship of the Monitoring Committee, which entails supervision of the board’s Strategic Plan and of its execution by Executive Directors Santiago Bau and Rafael Díaz Yeregui. She will in addition continue to serve as Chairwoman of the Appointments and Remuneration Committee.

Her stated objective is to contribute “to the development of the Group’s business and investment, which in this new financial year 2026-2027 will reach €650 million.” The investments, says the Group, will go towards the store refurbishment, technology and logistics, and business expansion.

On top of the foregoing, Álvarez has become Chairwoman of the Ramón Areces Foundation, the non-profit established in 1976 by, and named for, the retailer’s founder.

The Álvarez sisters are the daughters and heirs of longtime CEO Isidoro Álvarez, himself nephew to the founder. Together, through Cartera de Valores IASA, they hold a majority stake of almost 70 percent in the El Corte Inglés.
