Moncler has incorporated a breathable, lightweight, waterproof composite fabric called Dyneema into its new, functional Grenoble skiwear collection for autumn/winter 2020. Produced by Royal DSM, Dyneema is purportedly the world’s strongest and lightest fiber – both 15 times stronger than steel and less dense than water. In other words, it floats. The Grenoble collection’s head of design, Sandro Mandrino, was the first to resort to Dyneema – specifically Dyneema Composite Fabric – through the Moncler Genius project, in which several designers collaborate with the company on signature collections. Variants of Dyneema include denim, knits, wovens and hybrids. Marcio Manique, Royal DSM’s global business director for consumer & professional protection, expects Moncler soon to adopt bio-based Dyneema fabrics as well. Founded in 1902, Royal DSM describes itself as a “global science-based company in nutrition, health and sustainable living.” It is headquartered in the Dutch city of Heerlen, reports annual net sales of about €10 billion and employs about 23,000 people.
