NURVV, the six-year-old British wearables start-up, has declared that every pair of its Run smart insoles will henceforth use 32 sensors to measure “running power” – a measurement in Watts that, the company claims, has come into widespread use in recent years among professional runners. Unlike wrist wearables, the insoles go beyond pace and heart rate to collect data at the foot. For indoor runs a “Power Dial” indicates the runner’s “Power Zone,” which resembles a heart rate zone. For indoor and outdoor runs without a heart rate monitor, the system delivers audio cues for every shift in the power zone. An Apple Watch will deliver a Power cue and Power Zone audio cues in the absence of a heart rate monitor. Afterwards, the system puts out a circular chart of the run, called the “Running Power Form Report.” Runners can perform a “Power Test” to determine their “Threshold Power,” i.e. the power they can sustain for 45-60 minutes. The “Power Workout” feature – which varies from constant effort to intervals and negative splits – can be performed indoors or outdoors with an Android phone, an iPhone or an Apple Watch.
