Rip Curl has come under fire after featuring a transgender athlete in a recently launched marketing campaign. The company, a subsidiary of New Zealand-based KMD Brands, showcased professional longboarder Sasha Jane Lowerson on its social media platforms. This move prompted criticism from some athletes and consumers, who called for a boycott of the brand.

Subsequently, the company decided to remove the post.

“Our recent post has sparked debate over transgender participation in competitive sports,” stated a Rip Curl spokesperson on Wednesday evening. “While we aim to promote surfing inclusivity, we understand that our post has caused upset. We apologize for any offense caused. It’s important to clarify that the featured surfer is not a replacement or sponsored athlete on the Rip Curl team.”

Rip Curl CEO Brooke Farris has chosen not to comment on the marketing campaign and its reactions.
