Decathlon has decided to close two mega-stores in different parts of Russia in less than a month. On Aug. 20, the French sporting goods retailer announced that it would close a store in Ivanovo. The decision was made against the background of a major slump in revenue due to the retail lockdown introduced in Russia in March to slow down the spread of the novel coronavirus and an abnormally warm winter, which undermined sales of some sporting goods. A second wave is feared. In July, Decathlon also closed its only store in Kostroma, citing its “unsatisfying operational performance.” At the beginning of the year, Decathlon had revealed plans to open 40 new stores in Russia by 2024, while continuing to boost its e-commerce segment.
