The 2011 U.K. Golf Participation Report put out by Sports Marketing Surveys indicates that there was no real drop in the practice of golf in the U.K. last year, with some exceptions. It found that about 4 million adults above the age of 15 played golf at least once on a full-length course during the year, about the same as in 2009. The total number of golfers accounts for about 8 percent of the U.K.'s population. The number of regular golfers, who play 12 times a year or more, grew as occasional golfers played more often, but the number of avid golfers (52 times a year or more) decreased significantly. This reflects a decrease in golf club membership, but highlights the importance of “nomad” golfers, as the number of rounds played in the U.K. was at its highest point in five years.
