The average number of rounds of golf played across England, Scotland and Wales during the fourth quarter of 2015 was down by 7 percent as compared to the fourth quarter of 2014. According to Sports Marketing Surveys (SMS), all the regions suffered a decrease in the number of rounds played in the quarter when compared to the same period a year earlier. The North experienced the worst results, with a reduction of nearly 30 percent in November and December versus the same period of 2014. In Scotland the decrease was by only 2.2 percent. The negative trend at the national level was partly due to the rainfall and storms, especially during the month of December, the warmest since 1910. The Rugby World Cup, which ran throughout October and featured regular coverage of the home nations, was possibly another factor. The rounds played in 2015, however, remained stable with 2014, which at the time was the best year since 2010, said SMS.
