The European Cyclists' Federation issued a study quantifying the contribution of cycling to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG): If citizens of the European Union all used their bicycles with the same intensity as Danes did in 2000, cycling an average of 2.6 km per day, they could help the EU to meet more than a quarter of its targeted emission reductions for the transport sector. The EU has set about reducing its GHG by 80 to 95 percent in 2050 compared with 1990. Cycling could contribute from 12 to 26 percent of that target, depending on the means of transportation that it replaces. The report therefore calls for wide-ranging plans to support cycling as a means of transportation, from the spread of e-bikes to bicycle sharing schemes.
