The Life Fitness division of Brunswick Corporation, which comprises the Life Fitness and Hammer Strength brands, slightly lifted its sales to $157.1 million in the first quarter. This amounted to an increase of 0.4 percent. The division's international sales fell by 13 percent, but commercial equipment sales enjoyed a large order from one of the group's customer categories. The operating earnings of the Life Fitness division inched up to $23.7 million, up from $23.4 million for the same period last year. Brunswick's billiards and bowling unit expanded its sales by 3 percent to $89.9 million while its operating profit crept up by $0.2 million to $14.4 million. The turnover of the entire Brunswick group, which further comprises a larger marine unit, dropped by 1.2 percent to $974.2 million, while its operating profit inched up to $67.6 million, including $0.2 million of restructuring charges. For the same quarter last year, the operating profit reached $67.0 million, with restructuring charges and impairment charges worth $5.3 million.
