Turkish textile exporters have set up a target to produce $60 billion worth of apparel in 2023. That compares with the 2011 figure of $16.5 billion, an 11 percent increase over 2010. More than 1.5 million new jobs would be created in the textile sector in the next 13 years as it works toward this goal. The project was initiated by the Uludag Clothing and Ready-to-wear Exporter Union with the support of the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporter Association. Turkey overall is striving to reach $500 billion total in exports by 2023, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the republic. The country is the second-largest supplier of clothing to the EU after China, with €7.7 billion worth exported in 2010, up by 11.6 percent over the previous year. Textile exports to the EU grew to €3.4 billion in 2010, up from €2.9 billion.
