Joining a growing number of industry officials, Kasper Rørsted has criticized plans by FIFA to double the frequency of its football World Cup, holding it every other year. The CEO of Adidas, which is one of the main sponsors of the World Cup, reportedly told a Danish newspaper: “I don’t think much of a football World Cup held every two years. There’s a European Championship here, there’s a Copa América in Latin America. One should also leave space for other things,” he said. The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, has been calling for doubling the World Cup’s frequency, noting that other big events like the Champions League, the Superbowl and the Wimbledon tennis tournament are held every year. A decision on the issue is expected by the end of 2021.
