Oakley is making a big splash at the London Olympics, where it is supplying more than 80 percent of the athletes who are wearing sunglasses. It has deals with more 700 athletes competing in the Games in 19 disciplines and coming from more than 200 countries. They are being invited to visit the Design Museum in London along the Thames River, near the Tower Bridge, where Oakley has set up its largest “Oakley Safe House” to date. They can get their sunglasses customized, playing around with the sunshades and the colors of the various components. They can also relax, mix and get great food. In releasing its results for the second quarter last Thursday, Luxottica said Oakley continued to post double-digit sales growth, with strong performance in Europe. While sunglasses continued to grow by double digits, prescription eyewear and apparel are recording even higher increases (more in EyeWear Intelligence).
