Macron has been named new technical sponsor of the Republican Football Flub (RFC) Akhmat, a team from the the Chechen capital of Grozny that competes in the Russian Premier League. The new three-year deal, which takes over from the club’s agreement with Adidas, will begin from the next season. The contract is Macron’s first in the Russian Premier League. The RFC Akhmat club was originally founded as Dynamo in 1946, and was later named Terek between 1958 and 2017. The name “Akhmat” is a reference to Akhmat Kadyrov, the first president of the Chechen Republic, who died in 2004. The RFC Akhmat won the Russian Cup in the 2003/04 season, becoming at the time the first team outside of the Russian Premier League to win the trophy. Also in the 2003/04 season, the club was promoted to Russia’s top flight for the first time.
