JD Sports is planning to open another 16 stores in Spain, two of them in Madrid, according to Modaes.

The British chain has about 130 stores under the JD banner in the country at present.

JD entered Spain in 2012, choosing Granada for its first store. Among Spain’s autonomous communities, Andalusia has the most stores, with 24. Catalonia has 17, Madrid 16, the Canary Islands another 16 and Valencia 15. In January 2024, JD’s mixed store count for Iberia, with the Sprinter banner included (Spain, Portugal, Andorra), stood at 429 stores, with a payroll of 10,741.

In July 2024, JD acquired Hibbett, adding 1,179 stores in North America, and in October it acquired Courir, adding 306 in Europe. By the close of 2024, JD Sports had amassed a worldwide total of 4,850 stores.

JD Sports Iberia’s sales for full-year 2023 (ended in January 2024), according to Modaes (which draws on Spain’s Commercial Register), amounted to €1.499 billion, up 20.2 percent from the previous year’s €1.247 billion. Operating and net income, however, were both down by double digits.
