The Russian President has confirmed the organization of the BRICS Games in 2024. BRICS is a political alliance comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The BRICS Games is an annual multi-sport event organized by the countries of the alliance. The event is usually organized by the country that holds the presidency of the group in that year.
The first BRICS tournament was held in Goa, India, in 2016, followed by Ganghzou, China, in 2017. The 2021, BRICS Games were again organized by India and again by China in 2022; however, these were held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2023 event was held in South Africa.
“We expect to hold the BRICS Games in June 2024,” Putin said at a BRICS summit on Aug. 23. Putin asked his government to submit proposals for the organization of the games in mid-May. The creation of the BRICS Games was later announced by Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin, who emphasized that the new event would not interfere with the international sports calendar.
The inaugural BRICS Games are expected to take place in Kazan, in southwest Russia, on June 12-23, 2024. The multi-sport event is set to feature a mix of traditional sports and e-sport disciplines. A tentative program featuring 22 sports at 12 venues across the Russian city is currently in the plan, Insidethegames has reported.
The leaders of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) met for the first time in St. Petersburg, Russia, on the sidelines of the G8 Summit in July 2006. In September 2006, the group was officially named BRIC during the first BRIC Foreign Ministers Meeting, held on the sidelines of the General Debate of the UN General Assembly in New York City. The BRIC group was renamed BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) after South Africa was admitted as a full member at the BRIC Foreign Ministers Meeting in New York in September 2010.
