Strava’s co-founder, Michael Horvath, is stepping down from the CEO role for a second time. Horvath co-founded the platform with Mark Gainey in 2009. He left the helm in 2013 to support his wife when she battled cancer, then returned in 2019. “I have decided that Strava needs a CEO with the experience and skills to help us make the most of this next chapter,” he now wrote in a letter dated Feb. 6. However, he concluded the letter by saying that he remained “as committed to Strava’s future as ever.” Last May, Strava reached the milestone of 100 million athletes who had signed up on its platform. The company benefited from the new habits during the pandemic, as its memberships doubled between 2020 and 2022. In January 2023, Strava acquired Fatmap, a mobile app for discovering, planning and sharing outdoor adventures.
