Teaser: The ten projects, revolving around the use of Strava Metro, have been chosen across Europe, North America and Asia/Oceania.

Strava has announced the ten innovative projects for its inaugural “Metro for Academic Researchers Program.” Each project will use Strava Metro’s de-identified, aggregated data to develop solutions for better, sustainable transportation networks. Furthermore, the Strava Metro team will provide the research teams with deeper insights into infrastructure gaps, travel patterns and community needs.

The projects selected in Europe are: “Active Commuting: The Role of Infrastructure in Promoting Everyday Sports Activity” (Gothenburg, Sweden); “Trail Blazers: Analysing Mountain Biking Usage Patterns and Rider Diversity in the Scottish Borders” (Scotland); and “Winter is Coming: Analysing Cyclists’ Behaviour in Autumn and Wintertime in Wroclaw” (Wroclaw, Poland). The other seven projects are from North America (five projects) and Asia/Oceania (two). The full list is available on the Strava website.

The Metro for Academic Researchers Program, announced in September 2024, was created to offer academic researchers and students access to Strava Metro’s dataset of bicycle and pedestrian trips. Strava is used by more than 135 million athletes in over 190 countries. The applications for the Metro for Academic Researchers Program were reviewed by a Strava committee, who checked a number of categories including alignment with Metro’s mission and potential community impact.
