The Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) has announced that it has started “a preliminary study” to consider a potential bid for the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. SOK acting vice president Hans von Uthmann will head the feasibility study’s steering group. The committee is planning to release an interim report of the planned study at its General Assembly on April 20.
Sweden was in the race to host the 2026 edition of the Winter Games through a joint Stockholm-Are bid but was defeated by another shared bid, from Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy. “The idea is to review the concept that existed for the candidacy in 2026,” said SOK’s secretary general, Åsa Edlund Jönsson. Sweden hosted the Summer Olympics in 1912 but has never hosted a Winter Games, despite the prominent place that winter sports have in the country.
Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has delayed the process and announced that it might postpone its decision on the 2030 Winter Games hosts until 2024.
