Following a recommendation by the Olympic Program Commission, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board has proposed the following seven sports for the initial sports program of the Olympic Winter Games 2030:

  • biathlon
  • bobsleigh
  • curling
  • ice hockey
  • luge
  • skating
  • skiing

All seven sports have been part of the initial sports program of the Olympic Winter Games since Nagano 1998. The proposal will now be put forward to the 142nd IOC session in Paris for a decision. On the same occasion, the host city of the Olympic Winter Games 2030 will also be elected.

The IOC explained that the inclusion of a sport leaves the flexibility to review associated disciplines, events and athlete quotas. The Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG) has the opportunity to propose additional sports. Milano Cortina 2026 was the first Winter OCOG to propose the inclusion of an additional sport – ski mountaineering – for its edition of the Games.

For the first time in the Olympic Winter Games’ history, the IOC Executive Board approved a new step to determine the disciplines in each sport approximately five years before the Games, in a process similar to that adopted for LA28. This is meant to give athletes, their National Olympic Committees and the International Federations extra time to prepare for the Games.

The evaluation criteria for the disciplines will be finalized in the final quarter of 2024 in collaboration with the Winter International Sports Federations, the OCOG and the IOC. The event program and athlete quota will be finalized no later than 2027.
