As part of the “Plastic free” July, Italian technical sportswear brand UYN has unveiled a technical shirt made entirely of bio-based fibers. The special edition Reinvented bio-shirt is made with a mix of organic-based fibers that can replace traditional synthetics derived from fossil fuels and still allow for breathability and ventilation during outdoor activities.

The t-shirt is the result of research carried out by the AREAS (Academy For Research and Engineering in Apparel and Sport) laboratory and is made from three high-performance bio-fibers: Coolth_SL, derived from the thin filaments that wrap around cotton seeds, which help to create a highly hygroscopic fiber capable of keeping the skin cool and dry; Natex, obtained from castor oil seeds, 50 percent faster to dry and 25 percent lighter than traditional nylon, featuring a natural bacteriostatic and anti-odor effect; and Flexicorn, an elastic fiber made from corn seeds and used by UYN as a sustainable alternative to elastane.

Through the use of these next-generation bio-based fibers, UYN aims to show that it is possible to achieve a sustainable post-synthetic future in technical clothing.

Made from a single tube of fabric using UYN’s proprietary Fullmotion construction, textile waste and production time have been reduced by 15 percent, according to the brand, meaning reduced use of electricity and lower CO2 emissions. The graphics on the chest are made with water-based inks.

The Reinvented shirt is manufactured in Asola, Italy, and is only available on uynsports.com.
