The IOC has announced a $10,000 grant for every Olympic competitor from Milano Cortina 2026, regardless of medal, sport or nationality, delivered through National Olympic Committee structures, with first payments in 2027 and a total fund of $140 million per Games cycle.
Every athlete who competes at an Olympic Games will receive a $10,000 (€8,776) grant under a landmark new initiative announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its 146th Session in Lausanne this week.
The “Fit for the Future Olympian Grant” will be available to all Olympians from the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games onwards, regardless of medal, sport or nationality – the first time in Olympic history that universal financial support of this kind has been offered to every competitor.
A universal grant, not prize money
The fund is substantial. With approximately 14,000 Olympians eligible per Olympiad, the IOC has set aside $140 million (almost €123m) per cycle to support athletes either in continuing their sporting careers or managing the transition out of elite competition.
The grant will be delivered through existing National Olympic Committee structures, with applications expected to open later this year and first payments scheduled for 2027.
Put into context, $10,000 will not come close to covering the full cost of training and competing at Olympic level – but it is a meaningful addition to the brand partnerships, sponsorships and national funding programs that most elite athletes already depend on to make their careers viable.
The thinking behind the grant
The announcement was made by IOC Athletes’ Commission Chair Pau Gasol, who was emphatic that the grant is not prize money. “This is about recognising the journey and the commitment it takes to become an Olympian,” he said.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry described the initiative as something that “has been a topic of conversation for many years.”
All Olympians are eligible, provided that they have not committed an Anti-Doping Rule Violation, or violated the IOC Code of Ethics, the Conditions of Participation, or the Olympic Charter.
IOC grant represents new spending power for Olympians
Elite athletes are among the most influential consumers and brand ambassadors in the market. A guaranteed $10,000 grant – available to fund either continued training or career transition – represents new discretionary spending power for a pool of roughly 14,000 athletes every four years.
Whether that flows toward equipment, coaching, education or business ventures will vary, but brands and retailers with strong athlete community programs are well placed to benefit.
