Burton Snowboards's president, John Lacy, informed its 900-odd employees on March 16 that about 4 percent of its global staff was being laid off because of the poor snowfall in the past winter, global economic instability and a “challenged retail landscape.” The bankrupt Sports Authority chain in the U.S. owes $3,918,208 to Burton. The cuts are being made in every area of the business and also at Burton's European office in Innsbruck, which employs about 90 people. Its message to the staff says that Burton will do everything it can to “help ensure these individuals have the tools and backing they need to take on this next chapter.”
