The global football apparel market is projected to accelerate at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8 percent during the 2025-2029 period, according to a new report by research advisory firm Technavio. Market growth is driven by the demand for jerseys worn by popular football players. However, the availability of counterfeit products poses a significant challenge.

Online platforms are driving sales as several consumers prefer shopping from home. Digital technologies such as augmented reality (AR) enable virtual try-ons and revolutionize the shopping experience. Sponsorship deals involving sports celebrities and players establishing their branded merchandise further fuel demand for football apparel. Consumers are increasingly concerned with sustainability issues and interested in eco-friendly materials.

Counterfeit products pose a significant challenge to market growth. In a recent operation, the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center and the National Football League (NFL) in the US seized more than 267,511 counterfeit sports-related items worth around $97.8 million, reminds Technavio. Counterfeit goods negatively impact the prices of original football apparel and profit margins for manufacturing companies. Efforts to fight this issue, including increased enforcement and consumer education, are ongoing.
