Lululemon has teamed up with LanzaTech to create what they claim to be the world’s first yarn and fabric derived from recycled carbon emissions. LanzaTech, a biotech company that uses biology and big data to create climate-safe materials and fuels, works with India Glycols and Far Eastern New Century (FENC) to convert ethanol sourced from waste carbon into polyester. LanzaTech sources carbon from different types of feedstocks, from industrial emissions to household waste, including textile waste, as well as atmospheric CO². The gas stream is fermented by LanzaTech’s special microorganisms into ethanol or other chemicals. Instead of using sugars and yeasts, likein  traditional fermentation, its process uses the carbon contained in waste gases and the microorganisms. Recycling carbon that would otherwise be emitted to the atmosphere is seen as a key element of the circular economy. For Lululemon, the collaboration with LanzaTech is meant to contribute to achieving its Impact Agenda goals, which involve making 100 percent of Lululemon products with sustainable materials and end-of-use solutions by 2030. Lululemon released its first Impact Agenda in October.
