The German Retail Association HDE has published its latest field study on consumer mobility for city shopping, conducted in association with GfK in Germany. The “Standortmonitor” (location monitor) 2022 reveals consumer preferences for means of transport while shopping in city centers.

According to the report, 63 percent of visitors to city centers use their cars for the trip to town and would like to see more inexpensive parking spaces in particular. The majority (75%) of the pedestrians among the study participants were very satisfied with their mobility choice, while those who traveled by car into town showed the least satisfaction rate (54%) compared with other means of transport. When comparing small and large cities, it is not surprising that there are much more shoppers in large cities who came by public transport (63%) than shoppers in small cities (31%), where the frequency and infrastructure are significantly poorer.

Bikes and e-bikes are used by only 10 percent of young people as a means, whereas roughly a third of shoppers aged over 35 years regularly use their bikes for a trip to town. Asked about the frequency of their shopping trips, the majority of all consumer interviewed visit town two to three times per year. However, 45 percent of younger people (18 to 34) buy apparel, shoes and other goods in town at least seven times per year (only 22% of people over 54 years shop that frequently), with 13 percent of all participants going once or even more times per week.
