Dorel Industries has announced that it will close its assembly and testing facility in Bedford, Pennsylvania towards the end of the year, and lay off 100 employees as part of a global restructuring of its Recreational/Leisure segment. The segment owns the Cannondale, Schwinn, GT, Mongoose and Sugoi bike brands. Operations currently performed in Bedford include manufacturing, assembly, testing, quality control and customer and technical services. Recreational/Leisure will relocate its research and development facility, currently in Bethel, Connecticut, to the segment's new headquarters in Wilton, Connecticut. The former retail lab in Bethel will be converted to accommodate the activities of the Guru Academy. The segment will incur around $14-$16 million pre-tax restructuring charges associated with this plan of which 70 percent are non-cash, in view of annualized cost savings of at least $6 million once the restructuring is completed, in late 2014. The plan aims at reducing development and supply chain lead times, improving cost structures and operating margins, and enhancing quality while lowering warranty costs, the company said.
