A European Olympic Committee (EOC) Refugee Team will compete at the upcoming Kraków-Małopolska 2023 European Games later this year due to a joint effort between the EOC and the Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF). It will be the first time such a team competes in continental Games. The team is set to comprise five members, including the taekwondo athletes Kasra Mehdipournejad, Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin and Dina Pouryounes Langeroudi and boxers Cindy Winner Djankeu Ngamba and Farid Walizadeh. Iranian-born Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin and Dina Pouryounes Langeroudi were previously part of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team in Tokyo 2020. The athletes competing as part of the EOC Refugee Team are all Refugee Athlete Scholarship-holders on the IOC Refugee Athlete Support program and aim to be part of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team for Paris 2024. The Refugee Athlete Scholarships were established by the IOC following the participation of the first-ever IOC Refugee Olympic Team at the Olympic Games Rio 2016. The IOC funded these scholarships through its Olympic Solidarity program and managed with the ORF. There are currently 56 Refugee Athlete Scholarship holders hoping to be selected for the IOC Refugee Olympic Team for Paris 2024. They come from 12 countries, live in 20 host countries, and compete in 13 sports. The Kraków-Małopolska 2023 European Games are set to take place from June 21 to July 2.
