Fenix Outdoor had a total turnover of 1,531.9 million Swedish kronor (€173.8m-$229.4m) in 2011, a 15 percent increase from 2010, with acquisitions accounting for SEK 136 million (€15.4m-$20.4m). The Swedish company owns a number of high profile Scandinavian brands such as Fjällräven, Tierra, Primus, Hanwag and Brunton, as well as two retail chains - Naturkompaniet and Partioaitta. During 2011, Fenix Outdoor acquired three companies. The first was Bus Sport, which is a distributor of outdoor products to the Swiss market, with Hanwag and Fjällräven being two of the major brands it carries. Next was Fjällräven USA, which is a relatively newly established distributor for Fjällräven in the American market. In May, Fenix Outdoor acquired the Finnish retail chain Partioaitta, which has 11 stores. The brands under Fenix Outdoor showed stable growth and a turnover of SEK 1,089.3 million (€123.6m-$163.1m). The group's retail stores, however, reported a decline in turnover to SEK 441.6 million (€50.1m-$66.1m). Sales decreased due to the slow start to the winter season, in comparison with the record early start in 2010. Furthermore, the strong Swedish krona can also be seen as a factor that limited the growth in turnover. In terms of financial results, Fenix Outdoor's operating profit in 2011 decreased by 7 percent to SEK 251.4 million (€28.5m-$37.6m). Fenix explains that the decrease was partly due to lower sales at its retail chains, but also due to higher operating costs related to the three acquisitions (more in The Outdoor Industry Compass).
