Mexico has officially withdrawn its bid to host the 2036 Olympics. The announcement came last week from the President of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM), Maria José Alcalá, during the unveiling of sponsors for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
In October 2022, Mexico had initially expressed its intention to compete for the hosting rights for either 2036 or 2040. This bid would have marked the second time Mexico hosted the Olympics, with the first being in 1968. However, citing intense competition, Alcalá stated, “We’ve been in contact with the International Olympic Committee, and we’ve seen that the competition is very tough.” The IOC’s Commission for the Future Olympic Games had anticipated more than ten bids for the 2036 event. The IOC had previously modified application requirements, allowing bids from regions, multiple cities, or even multiple countries.
The current contenders to host the 2036 Olympics include Poland, Turkey, Indonesia and India. The destination for the games after Paris 2024, Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 remains uncertain.
