Peter Moore, who shaped Nike’s and Adidas’ product design in the 1980s and 1990s, passed away on April 29 at the age of 78.

After working freelance as a design consultant for Nike since 1977, Moore joined Nike in 1983 as its first creative director, working with Bruce Kilgore to design the Wings logo and the Jumpman logo and the iconic Air Jordan 1. He is also credited with the design of the Nike Dunk. In 1987, Moore left the company alongside Nike veteran Rob Strasser to form Sports Inc, a Portland-based design consultancy that was soon approached by Adidas. Moore designed the Mountain logo for the German brand, which was first used by Adidas Equipment in early 1991 and now serves as the brand’s primary trademark. Sports Inc. was acquired by Adidas AG in 1993, laying the foundation for Adidas America, for which Moore and Strasser served as creative director and CEO, respectively. After Strasser’s death in 1993, Moore took over as head of Adidas’ U.S. operations until his retirement in 1998, when he decided to focus on art and printmaking but remained a consultant for several years. Moore is survived by his wife and three sons.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Peter Moore, an iconic designer whose legacy will forever be connected to Jordan Brand, and the sneaker culture he helped to create,” said Howard White, vice president of Jordan Brand.

“The Adidas family is saddened by the passing of our dear friend Peter Moore,” Adidas wrote in a statement. “Our hearts are with Peter’s family, friends, and everyone who knew him. Peter was a true legend and icon in our industry, and it is impossible to overstate the impact he has had on Adidas. He will be greatly missed, and his legacy will live on forever.”
